Binaural beat, 8 to 13 Hz difference (8, 10 and 12 Hz in the app)

Alpha waves binaural beat: 10 Hz difference between two carrier tones producing the 8 to 13 Hz rhythm of relaxed wakefulness

Alpha is the 8 to 13 Hz band, the rhythm of a brain that is relaxed and awake at the same time: eyes closed, nothing urgent, ready. An alpha binaural beat is the middle setting between theta's calm and beta's alertness, and it suits reading, light work and a calm start to the day.

What an alpha beat is

Alpha, 8 to 13 Hz, is the rhythm your brain produces when you close your eyes and relax without falling asleep: present, unhurried, not working hard. An alpha binaural beat gives the brain that rate to follow, using two carrier tones 8, 10 or 12 Hz apart, one per ear. In Mindael all three are generated over a clean carrier.

Where it sits among the bands

Think of the beats as a dial. Theta is the evening and the meditation cushion. Beta is the deadline. Alpha is the middle: a calm morning, a book, a journal, light work that needs attention but not force. The 2019 meta-analysis of 22 binaural beat studies found reliable effects on attention and anxiety across the bands used (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019); the vigilance study that favoured beta for sharp attention also found the slower bands produced calmer mood (Lane et al., 1998), which is the trade alpha makes.

How to listen

Earbuds, 10 Hz to start, green noise or pink over it at about twice its volume. Twenty-five minutes for a reading block, or the first half hour of the day with a 417 Hz tone on top as a start cue. If you feel yourself drifting, step up to 12 Hz; if you feel wired, step down to 8.

All five bands and what each is for are in our guide to binaural beats.

Frequently asked questions

What are alpha binaural beats for?

For being calm and awake at once. Alpha is the rhythm of relaxed wakefulness, so an alpha beat suits reading, journaling, light admin and the first quiet half hour of a morning, where theta would be too drowsy and beta too keyed up.

Which alpha frequency should I use?

10 Hz is the centre of the band and the usual starting point. 8 Hz leans toward theta and suits a calmer, more inward session; 12 Hz leans toward beta and suits light work that needs a little more edge.

Alpha or beta for studying?

Beta for exam-style practice and anything that needs vigilance; alpha for reading and reviewing. Many of our listeners use alpha for the first block of the day and beta for the hardest one.

Do I need headphones?

Yes. The beat exists only when each ear gets its own tone.
