The Best Binaural Beats App for iPhone: What to Look For

Most "binaural beats" you find online are not binaural at all. They are a single pulsing tone, which works on a speaker and does nothing in your brain. A real binaural beat needs two different tones, one per ear, and an app that generates them properly. Mindael does, for every band from delta to gamma, and it is free on the App Store. Here is the checklist we would use to judge any binaural beats app, including ours.

Best binaural beats app checklist: true two-channel beats, delta to gamma, clean carrier tone, layering, covered by Mindael

The best binaural beats app generates true two-channel beats with a clean carrier tone, covers all five bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma) at the exact frequencies it states, lets you layer the beat under noise or nature sound so the tone sits in the background, and runs on a timer. Mindael does all of this, free on iPhone, with studio-measured beats and samples you can hear on this site.

Why most “binaural beats” are not

A binaural beat is made when your left ear hears one tone, say 200 Hz, and your right ear hears a slightly different one, say 206 Hz. Your brainstem compares the two and produces the sense of a 6 Hz beat that does not exist in either ear. If the two tones are mixed before they reach you, on a speaker or in a video that was rendered to mono, what you hear is a monaural beat, a simple pulse in loudness. It is a different thing, and most of the research behind binaural beats does not apply to it. The first test of any app is whether it truly generates two channels.

The five bands, and the studies behind them

A good app gives you every band at the frequency it names. Delta, 1 to 4 Hz, is the sleep band: a 2018 study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found a 3 Hz beat lengthened stage 3 deep sleep. Theta, 4 to 8 Hz, is the relaxation band: a 2017 study found a 6 Hz beat raised theta activity within ten minutes. Alpha, 8 to 13 Hz, is calm wakefulness. Beta, 13 to 30 Hz, is alert focus: a 1998 study found beta beats improved vigilance and mood compared with theta and delta during a 30 minute task. Gamma, 40 Hz, is the fastest band, for the hardest hour. Mindael has all five, and you can hear a delta beat and gamma 40 Hz on our sound library pages before you download.

Layering, the feature that makes beats listenable

A bare beat gets tiring. The fix is to put it under a sound you like: a delta beat under ocean waves for sleep, a beta beat under brown noise for work. Mindael’s mixer does this, and it is the way most of our listeners use beats. The tone sits in the background, the noise or nature sound does the covering, and the beat does its quiet job.

What we would never claim

A binaural beat does not put you to sleep on its own and does not double your IQ. A 2019 meta-analysis found moderate effects, not miracles. We make the beats right, label them honestly and let you decide whether they help.

How to switch in five minutes

  1. Put on earbudsBinaural beats do not work on a speaker. This is the one rule.
  2. Pick the band for the jobDelta for sleep, theta for deep relaxation, alpha for reading, beta for work, gamma 40 Hz for the hardest hour.
  3. Layer it under a soundA delta beat under ocean waves or a beta beat under brown noise is easier to listen to than the bare tone.
  4. Keep it quietThe beat should be just audible. Louder does not mean stronger.
  5. Set a timerFifteen to forty-five minutes. Stop before it gets tiring.

Beats that are really binaural.

Every beat in Mindael is two carrier tones with the exact difference we state, measured in the studio, with a clean sine carrier. Layer a delta beat under ocean waves tonight, or gamma 40 Hz under brown noise tomorrow morning, and set the timer.

  • Delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma 40 Hz
  • Clean sine carriers, exact frequencies
  • Layer under noise or nature, with a timer

Frequently asked questions

Do binaural beats work?

A 2019 meta-analysis of 22 studies found a reliable, moderate effect on attention, memory and anxiety measures. A 2018 sleep-lab study found a 3 Hz delta beat lengthened deep sleep. The effect is modest and depends on headphones.

Do I need headphones for binaural beats?

Yes. Each ear must receive its own tone. On a speaker the two tones mix in the air and the beat becomes a simple pulse the brain does not process the same way.

Which binaural beat frequency should I use?

Match the band to the task: delta 1 to 4 Hz for sleep, theta 4 to 8 Hz for relaxation, alpha 8 to 13 Hz for calm reading, beta 13 to 30 Hz for focus, gamma 40 Hz for hard problem solving.

How long should I listen?

Most studies use 15 to 45 minutes. For sleep, set a timer so the beat fades after you are asleep.

Is the Mindael binaural beats app free?

Yes. Mindael is free on the App Store, with beats in every band from delta to gamma.
