285 Hz Solfeggio Frequency: The Settling Tone for Rest and Recovery

Pure tone at 285 Hz, solfeggio scale

285 Hz solfeggio frequency: a low warm tone for rest and settling, shown with its waveform

285 Hz is a low, warm solfeggio tone a little above 174 Hz, traditionally paired with restoration and settling. It is the tone in the real evening mix we sample on the site, under ocean and a theta beat, and it is the one we suggest for rest after a long day.

What 285 Hz is

285 Hz is the second tone of the extended solfeggio scale, a low, warm pitch near C sharp 4. It is high enough to register as a note and low enough to stay out of the way, which makes it the most mixable of the lower tones. In Mindael it is generated at exactly 285 Hz.

What it is used for

The tradition pairs 285 Hz with restoration and settling, the feeling of a body putting itself back in order after effort. That is close to how our listeners actually use it: not for sleep itself but for the hour before, when you want to stop being busy without yet being unconscious.

It is also the tone in the real three-layer mix you can hear on our ocean waves page: Ocean, a Theta 7.5 Hz beat and 285 Hz. That combination is the most saved evening mix among our listeners, and 285 Hz is what gives it warmth.

How to listen

Under something. Ocean or rain at roughly twice the tone’s volume, a theta beat if you have earbuds in, fifteen to thirty minutes. A speaker is fine for the tone alone. If you drift toward sleep, switch the theta beat to delta and let the timer take over.

All nine tones, the history and the research are in our guide to solfeggio frequencies.

The ocean sample on this site is a real Mindael mix: Ocean waves, Theta 7.5 Hz and this tone. Build it once in the app, save it, and your evening starts with one tap. The tone is generated at exactly 285 Hz, the ocean is recorded by us, and the timer fades it all out.

Fifteen to thirty minutes in the evening is what most people use. Under ocean with a theta beat it makes a complete wind-down session; our ocean page has a sample of exactly that mix.
