Best Focus App: What a Focus App Needs, How It Differs From iPhone Focus Mode, and How Mindael Covers It
A "focus app" can mean two different things. iPhone Focus mode, built into iOS, filters notifications and decides who can reach you. A focus app works on the other half: it gives your attention something steady to rest on and a block of time with a clear start and end. The research supports both halves, and they work best together. This page is the checklist of what a focus app needs, where each item comes from, and how Mindael, a sound app with a focus timer built in, covers it. Free to download on the App Store.

The best focus app puts a steady sound under your work, runs a timed block with real breaks, ends the block gently, lets you mix sounds for the task, works with the screen locked and offline, and asks for no account. Pair it with iPhone Focus mode, which filters notifications. The research behind each part: fixed breaks left students less tired than breaks they chose themselves, brief breaks prevented the decline in attention on a long task, moderate white noise helped memory in inattentive children, and a meta-analysis found binaural beats had a medium effect on attention and memory. Mindael covers the sound, the focus timer and the fade, free to download. It does not filter notifications; that is what Focus mode is for.
What to look for, and how Mindael covers it
| What you need | In Mindael |
|---|---|
| A steady sound under the work | Brown, pink, white and green noise generated to spec, rain, alpha, beta and gamma beats from our studio |
| A timed block with real breaks | 25/5 or 50/10, four blocks then a long break, counted for you |
| A gentle end | The sound fades out at the end of the block instead of an alarm |
| Mixing for the task | A beta beat under brown noise for a hard push, alpha under rain for reading |
| Runs with the screen locked | Timer and sound keep going in the background |

Two halves of focus
Focus breaks for two reasons: something interrupts you, or your attention drifts on its own. iPhone Focus mode deals with the first, by filtering notifications and calls. A focus app deals with the second, by giving your attention a steady background and a block of time to work in. Our best stay focused app checklist covers the interruptions side in detail; this page covers the attention side.
The checklist, explained
A steady sound. A sound with nothing to follow masks voices and the room, and it becomes a cue that the block has started. The research is strongest for people whose attention wanders most: moderate white noise improved memory performance in inattentive school children (Söderlund et al., 2010). For binaural beats, a meta-analysis of 22 studies found a medium-sized effect on attention and memory, larger with longer listening (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019). Our focus sounds guide covers which sound suits which task, and binaural beats explains how they work.
A timed block with real breaks. Attention declines over a long task, and brief breaks prevent that: in a lab study, people who switched away briefly kept their performance up while those who did not slowly declined (Ariga and Lleras, 2011). A timer makes the breaks happen. In a 2023 study with students, fixed Pomodoro-style breaks left people less tired and better able to concentrate than breaks they chose themselves (Biwer et al., 2023). The Pomodoro guide has the method.
A gentle end. An alarm in the middle of a thought is an interruption you scheduled. A fade at the end of the block lets you finish the sentence.
Mixing for the task. A beta beat under brown noise for a deadline push, an alpha beat under rain for reading, gamma under brown noise for a hard problem. Two sounds at once lets the block match the work.
Screen locked, offline, no account. A focus app should not be another screen to look at. Set the block, lock the phone, work.
What Mindael does not do
Mindael does not filter notifications or block other apps; iPhone Focus mode and Screen Time do that, and they work alongside it. It has no task list, statistics or streaks. For a timer built around studying, our best study timer app checklist is the companion page, and the habits around the block are in how to focus better.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best focus app?
One that gives you a steady sound, a timed block with real breaks and a gentle end, works offline and asks for no account. Mindael covers that, free to download. Use it with iPhone Focus mode, which handles notifications.
What is the difference between iPhone Focus mode and a focus app?
Focus mode is an iOS setting that filters notifications and calls. A focus app helps your attention once the interruptions are gone, with sound and a timed block. They do different jobs and work well together.
Do focus sounds really help?
For many people, yes. Moderate white noise improved memory in inattentive school children in one study, and a meta-analysis found binaural beats had a medium-sized effect on attention and memory. A steady sound also masks voices, which are one of the biggest distractions.
Is a focus timer worth it?
Yes, mostly because it makes the breaks happen. In a study with students, fixed Pomodoro-style breaks left people less tired and better able to concentrate than breaks they chose themselves.
Is there a focus app for driving?
For driving, use iPhone's Driving Focus, which silences notifications on the road. Do not use binaural beats or anything that makes you drowsy while driving.
Does Mindael work on a computer?
Mindael is an iPhone and iPad app. Many people run it on the phone, face down and locked, while they work on a computer.
