Stay focused app

Best Stay Focused App: What an App to Stay Focused Needs, With the Research, and How Mindael Covers It

A stay focused app has one job: to keep your attention on the task in front of you. The research says the biggest threats are interruptions you did not choose, including a phone notification you do not even answer, and noise, especially nearby speech. So the app that helps most is not the one with the most features, but the one that removes interruptions and adds a steady block to work in. This page is the checklist of what a stay focused app needs, where each item comes from, and how Mindael, a sound app with a focus timer built in, covers it. Free to download on the App Store.

Best stay focused app checklist: notifications off, a steady sound under the work, a fixed work and break cycle, a gentle end, runs with the screen locked, offline, no account, covered by Mindael

The best stay focused app keeps the phone quiet during the block, puts a steady sound under the work so voices and noise fade, runs a fixed work and break cycle, ends the block gently, keeps running with the screen locked, works offline and asks for no account. Notifications matter more than people think: in one study a call or text alert people did not answer still raised errors on an attention task, and a week with alerts on raised inattention compared with a week with them off. Mindael covers the sound, the block timer and the fade, free to download. It does not block other apps or websites; pair it with your phone's own Focus or Do Not Disturb setting for that.

What breaks focus

Two things, mostly: interruptions and noise. Interruptions are more expensive than they look. In an experiment on interrupted office work, people finished just as fast when interrupted but reported more stress, frustration and effort, because they rushed to make up the time (Mark et al., 2008). And the interruption does not have to be answered. In a study of 166 students, a call or text alert on their own phone, which they did not touch, increased errors on an attention task, by an amount the authors found comparable to actively using a phone in earlier studies (Stothart et al., 2015). Our focus sounds guide covers the noise side, and the focus at work guide the office version.

The checklist, explained

Notifications off. This is the item that matters most, and the one an app cannot do alone. In a field experiment, people spent one week with phone alerts on and one with them off, and reported more inattention and hyperactivity in the week with alerts on (Kushlev et al., 2016). Mindael has no feed and nothing to scroll. For the rest of the phone, turn on your phone’s Focus or Do Not Disturb setting before you start.

A steady sound. Noise, and especially nearby speech, competes for the same short-term memory you use to read and write. A steady sound with nothing to follow, brown noise, pink noise or rain, makes the room fade. For a hard push, a beta beat under brown noise in headphones.

A fixed block with real breaks. Fixed breaks work better than “I will stop when I am tired”: in a 2023 study with students, fixed Pomodoro-style breaks left people less tired and better able to concentrate than breaks they chose themselves (Biwer et al., 2023). Our Pomodoro guide has the method.

A gentle end. An alarm in the middle of a sentence is an interruption you scheduled. A fade lets you finish the thought.

Screen locked, offline, no account. A stay focused app that needs the screen on, a stream or a login is one more thing on the screen. Open it, set the block, lock the phone.

What Mindael does not do

It does not block other apps or websites, and it has no task list, statistics or streaks. For blocking, your phone’s built-in Focus and Screen Time settings do the job and work alongside it. For a timer built around study, our best study timer app checklist is the companion to this page, and the best Pomodoro app checklist covers work blocks in general. The habits around the block are in how to focus better.

How to switch in five minutes

  1. Download MindaelFree on the App Store, no account needed.
  2. Silence the phoneTurn on Focus or Do Not Disturb before you start. Calls from one or two people can still come through if you need them.
  3. Pick the soundBrown noise for a noisy room, rain for writing, a beta beat under brown noise for a hard push. Low enough to forget.
  4. Set the block25 minutes on and five off for most work, 50 and ten for deep work. Write the one goal of the block on paper.
  5. Phone face downLock the screen and put it out of reach. The sound and the timer keep running; the fade tells you when to stop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app to stay focused?

One that keeps interruptions out, masks noise, runs a fixed block with real breaks, ends gently and works offline without an account. Mindael covers the sound and the block, free to download. If you also want to block other apps or websites, use your phone's built-in Focus setting alongside it.

Do notifications really hurt focus if I ignore them?

Yes. In a study of 166 students, a call or text alert they did not answer still increased errors on an attention task. In another, people reported more inattention and hyperactivity in a week with alerts on than in a week with them off.

Does Mindael block apps or websites?

No. Mindael is the sound and the focus block. For blocking, iPhone and iPad have Focus and Screen Time built in, which work well together with it.

Is there a stay focused app for PC?

Mindael is an iPhone and iPad app. Many people run it on the phone, face down and locked, while working on the computer, which also keeps the timer off the screen they are trying to concentrate on.

What sound helps you stay focused?

A steady sound with no words: brown, pink or white noise, rain, or a beta beat under noise for a short hard block. Our focus sounds guide covers which suits which task.

How long should a focus block be?

25 minutes with a five-minute break is a good default. For writing, code or problem sets, 50 minutes with ten off often works better, because a block that ends just as you get going does more harm than good.
